Canine Assessment and Training Program
Dogs entering the shelter come from a range of backgrounds and socialization. It is our responsibility to determine the needs of the dogs and what we can do to help them become highly adoptable animals. Therefore, every dog that is admitted to DCAS is assessed to determine what behavioural rehabilitation is required and what type of home will be required for the individual dog.
Staff include training in their daily routine to create positive habits within the dog. Some dogs are quicker at learning than others, just like humans, but we attempt to provide them with the basic skills and knowledge that is required of them to have a successful life in their new home. This training will be passed onto the new owner to reinforce and continue with their new pet. The shelter has a close relationship with independent dog trainers who are willing to offer their support and guidance at a reduced price. Staff can provide you with the names of these businesses as the time of adoption.
Volunteers are also utilized to encourage appropriate behaviour from the dogs by rewarding behaviour that is desired such as: sit, stay, down, and not pulling on the leash during walks. Volunteer orientation is provided to volunteers to teach them how to encourage an emotionally and behaviourally balanced animal.
