Surrendering Animals
Surrendering a beloved pet to a shelter is a very difficult decision to make for pet owners. As living in a shelter can be extremely stressful for pets, owners who contact the shelter about surrendering are counseled to ensure surrendering is absolutely necessary.
Shelter staff are often able to provide owners with ways to keep their pets by providing advice about behaviour or by referring a pet health or behaviour specialist. If an owner is absolutely not able to keep their pet they are encouraged to try to find an alternate owner by asking friends and family if they can take the pet or by advertising on networking sites such as Craigslist, Facebook or adoption sites such as Petfinder or by way of a courtesy post on the DCAS website. However, if these options are not possible, DCAS will accept animals for surrender if the animal is owned by a Delta resident.
Surrender fees are outlined in the Delta Animal Control Bylaw 6893, 2010. Surrendering a pet to the shelter for adoption is $100.00 as outlined in the bylaw. This fee is to help the shelter recover the expense of caring for the pet until adoption.
Only animals considered adoptable will enter the adoption program and this will be discussed with the surrendering owner. Although, staff tries to make the adjustment from living in a home to living a shelter more comfortable, some animals do not do well in a shelter environment and are unable to show their "best side" to potential adopters. Owners are asked to complete a questionnaire about their pet so that potential adopters will have a better understanding of what the pet is like when in a home environment. Please allow for 20 minutes to complete this and other paper work .
